CARING BACK

This project, conducted in collaboration with CrossReach, focuses on enhancing educational care for young people with additional support needs through the involvement of past pupils. By investigating opportunities for these alumni to contribute back to specialist schools, the project aims to improve support systems and experiences for current students

Brief

“How could the experience of young people in educational care be enhanced with the input of past pupils in the care system to better meets the needs and experiences of the young people?”

Scope

For this project, we focused on three key groups

1. young people currently under the care of CrossReach
2. past pupils who have transitioned out of CrossReach care
3. CrossReach organization itself, which acts as a bridge between these two groups

Our task was to propose a plan for facilitating interaction between these groups

Desk Research

In our thorough desk research, we explored various angles that would give direction to this project.

One of the recurring insight that emerged during our desk research as well during the contextual partner meeting was that the care leaver period also known as the “transition period” is one where the young people needed the most guidance

Several other reasons include

  • age of autonomy

  • less funded

  • less prioritised

  • less support during transition

  • insufficient after-care

Because of the above reasons, our team chose to narrow down our focus on to the care leaver age

Stakeholder Mapping

This map helped us to visually represent and categorize individuals / organizations that are around the current pupils

Preparing for Adulthood

We extensively reviewed various case studies, blogs, and podcasts detailing the experiences of individuals within the care system. As we delved into categorizing this wealth of information, we discovered distinct patterns emerging, ultimately coalescing into six key categories. This process proved instrumental in refining our focus and pinpointing our area of emphasis

Moreover, immersing ourselves in these narratives not only enriched our understanding of the lives of care leavers but also served as a solid foundation for when we design a service for them

Interview and Workshop Insights

Design Opportunity

Focus Area

The insights from the interview and workshop all pointed towards the crucial role of self-development and relationship-building for care leavers. We narrowed down our focus area to this

“How might past pupils facilitate self-development and build a circle of trust for young people leaving care?”

Objectives

1. Current Pupil

  • develop sense of self + trust ( what )

  • how this can be supported ( how )

  1. Past Pupil / Mick

  • Direct or Indirect Engagement? (what)

  • Support can be given ( how )

Overview

User Journey

Touchpoint #1 : Pre-Testing Booklet

Understand the interests and comfort levels of current pupils in various creative expressions. Sensory activities give youngsters the chance to express creativity through hands-on tasks, enhancing problem-solving, cognitive abilities, and self-expression

Touchpoint #2 : Storyboard

The second touchpoint is the workshop itself and we have represented that through this storyboard by taking an example of a pottery painting workshop
